Teacher of the Year semifinalists named

Santa Rosa Education Foundation has announced the five semifinalists selected from 33 nominees for Santa Rosa School District’s Teacher of the Year.  Congratulations to Tami McConnell, Navarre High; Tammie White, Holley-Navarre Intermediate; Audrey Goodwin, B.C. Russell Elementary; Kenda Parker, Santa Rosa High; and Annette Smith, S.S. Dixon Intermediate. The SREF Teacher of the Year Selection Committee will observe the semifinalists in their classrooms and conduct interviews before selecting three finalists later this month.

Truck overturns on I-10

A cargo truck carrying produce overturned on east-bound I-10 near mile maker 23 at approximately 3:55 p.m. Jan. 6 with no injuries.  Since the initial accident, there have been two secondary accidents in the area, the first with one patient transported by ground and three patients transported by ground in the second. No I-10 lane closures have resulted from the three accidents, but motorists should use caution or avoid the area if possible.

Lane Restrictions on Highway 87 Multi-Lane Project

On Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 10 and 11, traffic on SR 87, near Dean Creak will encounter intermittent lane restrictions between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. as  crews from Anderson Columbia perform drainage work (weather permitting). Motorists are reminded to watch for traffic flaggers and to use caution when traveling through the work zone. The work is part of a $15 million project that will widen SR 87 from two to four lanes between Five Forks Road and the Eglin Air Force Base boundary.

The business of wellness -- alive and well?

Would you do it? Would you open a business in one of the worst economies in decades, with little cash, because you had a big dream? You might if you believed the area where you were opening the business was hungry for your product or service. It would be a risk, but you would have faith in the natural economy of supply and demand. What would cause Robin Stewart to do just that; to work every month since January 2009 to provide a business home for a variety of practitioners? The answer is that Stewart has a passion and a belief in an idea beyond just the absence of illness.

Brush fire ignited by residential debris burn

Santa Rosa County officials advised residents to use caution when burning yard debris following a brush fire in Avalon on Dec. 28, in which crews from the Avalon and Bagdad fire departments and the division of forestry responded. The brush fire was the result of a backyard debris burn getting out of control. The fire burned approximately eight acres of grass and trees and threatened a home, cars and a boat, but caused no damage or injuries.

Residential fires in Navarre and Milton

A residential fire in Navarre displaced a family of eight early on the morning of Dec. 27. According to Santa Rosa County Emergency Communications, the residents of a mobile home on Toledo Street reported a fire in their home at 2:08 a.m. Fire departments from Holley-Navarre, Navarre Beach and Florosa responded and called the fire was out at 2:43 a.m. Holley-Navarre Fire Chief Ron Norton stated the fire originated in the heater closet, on the floor under the heater.
