Memorial Day: ‘It’s not about the boating or barbecues’

Monday, May 27 was Memorial Day. It was a beautiful, sunny day with comfortable temperatures and a gentle breeze blowing off the water at a ceremony held at Navarre Park. The day meant many things to different people in attendance, but U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Michael “Dane” Acord best put it in perspective. “It is not about department store sales, boating, barbecues or the start of summer,” Acord said. “It is about pausing briefly to honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Pensacola Chamber leader presents two-county economic development plan

“This is unprecedented,” said Jim Hizer, President and CEO of the Greater Pensacola Chamber as he was updating the Santa Rosa commissioners on VISION 2015. Complaints of SRC practices produce procedural change

Following a citizen’s complaint to the State Attorney’s Office, Santa Rosa County Attorney, Angela Jones, has decided she will no longer alter or allow alteration of ordinances following the county issuing public notices and provided public inspection but prior to enactment. The policy was brought about in part because of a letter from Navarre resident Etta Lawlor written to local State Attorney Bill Eddins. Weekley gets first PGA win in 5 years at Colonial

Raiders pull out a last-second victory in jamboree

The Raider defense allowed 404 yards against Escambia in the first game of the Jamboree. However, they came up big with two turnovers that helped to propel the Raiders to an 18 – 14 come-from-behind win over the Bulldogs in the game played at Crestview on May 24.

Offense will be key to next soccer season

In its first year under coach Ken MacDonald, the Navarre High School boys’ soccer team had one of its best seasons ever. The Raiders beat Tallahassee Chiles 2-1 in their opening regional playoff game. A few days later, it took a last-minute Niceville goal to eliminate the Raiders in the region semifinal game.
