Olympic wrestler has local ties

 

Wrestler Sam Hazewinkel, a Pensacola Christian Academy graduate, begins his quest for Olympic gold Friday in London. Competition begins at 7 a.m. CT.

Hazewinkel, 28, will compete in the 55-kilogram freestyle bracket. He is Team USA’s top-ranked wrestler in that weight division. He went 140-0 and won three state championships at Pensacola Christian Academy, won two Junior National Greco Championship and 107-7 in three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. Hazewinkel lives in Norman, Okla., where he trains with Gator Wrestling Club, coached by Rob Hermann.

Hazewinkel’s father, Dave, and uncle, Jim, both were Olympians.

U.S.-Japan rematch to decide soccer gold

The U.S. women's national soccer team plays Japan at 1:45 p.m. CT Thursday for the 2012 Olympic championship. The final is a rematch of a dramatic 2011 Women's World Cup title game won by Japan. The game can be seen live on NBC Sports Network and NBC Olympic Soccer Channel, streamed online at NBC Live Extra or followed at ussoccer.com’s Match Tracker and Twitter's @ussoccer_wnt.

West Florida star commits to UAB

 

Demetrius Smith, who will be a senior at West Florida High School in Pensacola this year, has verbally committed to play football for the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers.

"It's a great opportunity for him and he is one of these kids who has been a four-year starter for us," said Jaguars coach Harry Lees. "He's tall and he has really good speed."

Smith is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 155 pounds. He played cornerback and free safety for the Jaguars.

Golf event to benefit Andrews Institute

 

The Andrews Institute will host a golf tournament Saturday at Tiger Point Golf Club to raise money for its sports medicine outreach department. Proceeds will help buy a golf cart for the institute’s Sports Medicine Outreach Department to help injured athletes and meet costs associated with the Mobile Sports Medicine Center. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Sports Medicine Outreach Department is a not-for-profit organization which provides full-time certified athletic trainers for on-site medical care at local high schools and community and recreational events.

Cost for a corporate team with a tee marker is $500. Corporate team registration is $400; individuals may register for $100 and buy a mulligan package for $20.
