Raiders to open volleyball season tonight

The Navarre High School volleyball team hosts Milton tonight in its 2012 season opener. The junior varsity teams will play at 5:30 p.m. at the Navarre High School gym. The varsity match is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The match originally was to be played last night. Hurricane Isaac caused the Raiders’ first scheduled match, Monday against Choctawhatchee, to be canceled. No make-up date has been announced.

Raiders still could play Friday

Navarre High School football coach Jay Walls said at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday that the Raiders’ season-opening game against Washington still is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bennett C. Russell Stadium at NHS.

Hurricane Isaac caused Escambia and Santa Rosa counties to close schools, causing Navarre and Washington to tentatively reschedule the game for Saturday. But because the worst effects of the storm passed through the area on Tuesday, Walls got permission from the Santa Rosa County Schools’ administration to practice Wednesday.

Washington coach Craig LaBorde this morning is expected to seek permission for the Wildcats to practice from Escambia County administrators.

“Right now, we expect both teams will be able to practice and we’ll play Friday,” Walls said.

LaBorde couldn’t be reached this morning for comment.

Hurricane Isaac has caused Cantonment-Tate High School to cancel its game at St. Charles Catholic in LaPlace, La.; Pine Forest to cancel its game at Stephenson, Ga., and Pensacola to cancel its game at Tallahassee-Lincoln. The West Florida-Escambia game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Emmitt Smith Field.

Former FWB quarterback earns offensive honors

The Jayhawk Conference announced Tuesday that former Fort Walton Beach High School quarterback Luke Barnes of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College is the league’s first Offensive Player of the Week.

Barnes broke several of Heisman Trophy winner Danny Weurffel’s passing records at Fort Walton Beach.

In his first game as a Blue Dragon, Barnes threw five touchdowns and a school-record 459 yards and also scored a rushing touchdown in 10th-ranked Hutchinson’s season-opening 58-26 win against No. 17 Coffeyville. He completed 28 of 38 passes without an interception.

Greg Meinzer set the Blue Dragons’ previous record of 443 yards in 2005 against Dodge City.

Barnes transferred to Hutchinson from Troy University.

Winning conference player of the week honors makes Barnes eligible for National Junior College Athletics Association national honors, to be announced Wednesday.
