Volleyball Raiders top 2011 wins total

It only took the 2012 Navarre High School volleyball team six matches to win more than it did in 26 matches a year ago.

The Raiders beat West Florida in three sets Monday at NHS, improving to 5-1 overall. Navarre was 4-22 in 2011.

Set scores against the Jaguars were 25-15, 25-13 and 25-17.

Shamani Booker again led the Raiders’ balanced effort with 5 kills, 4 aces and 4 digs. Allison Freer had 8 digs and 6 kills, Sarah Betts added 7 kills and 3 aces and Kiera Foster added 3 kills.

Navarre resumes District 1-6A action tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Pace hoping to improve its 4-0 district mark. The Raiders host Pine Forest, also a district foe, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The freshmen and junior varsity teams will play both nights, at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. respectively.

Raiders face untested Tigers tonight

Navarre begins a tortuous – and possibly torturous – stretch of games at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Pensacola High School’s Jim Scoggins Stadium.

The Raiders, who beat Washington 33-7 in the friendly confines of NHS’ Bennett C. Russell Stadium last week, play four straight games on the road against traditionally strong teams. Fortunately, only one – at Niceville on Sept. 21 – counts in the District 2-6A standings. Navarre is scheduled to play Santa Rosa County rival Pace next Friday and travel to Pensacola Catholic on Sept. 28.

Pensacola, which finished 9-3 in 2011, will be playing its first game of the season after Hurricane Isaac forced the Tigers to cancel its showdown with Tallahassee Lincoln.

“(Pensacola’s players) want to hit somebody else,” PHS coach Mike Bennett said in published reports. “They want to play against somebody else. They’re ready to play.”

The Tigers may not have game experience under their belts, but PHS brings plenty of confidence bred by years of success. The Tigers won the Class 3A state championship in 2009, advanced to the region championship in 2010 and made it to the region semifinal last year. Pensacola has been in the playoffs nine of the last 10 years and 10 times overall under head coach Mike Bennett.

Navarre is trying to return to the playoffs for just the fourth time in school history. The Raiders advanced to the region semifinal two years ago before losing to Lincoln. Navarre finished 5-5 in 2011.

The Raiders and Tigers combined for more than 700 yards of total offense in a 29-22 Pensacola win at Navarre last year.

Pensacola has five starters back on each side of the ball but, like Navarre, has new starters at quarterback and in the backfield. Players to watch include senior signal-caller Jonathan Bennett, senior running back/safety Blake Norwood and senior defensive end Deandre Farrington.

To get to Jim Scoggins Stadium, take U.S. Highway 98 into Pensacola, turn right onto Ninth Avenue; drive 0.4 miles then turn left onto East Cervantes Street. In just more than half a mile, turn right onto North Palafox Street and drive 0.9 miles. Turn left onto West Maxwell Street. Pensacola High School is less than a third of a mile west of Palafox on Maxwell Street.

Lady Raiders host golf at Hidden Creek

Navarre High School’s girls’ golf team finished third at a three-team meet it hosted Thursday at The Club at Hidden Creek.

Milton finished first with the lowest team score, 178, and Gulf Breeze shot 195. The Raiders finished well off the pace with a team score of 219.

Katt Crowdiss of Gulf Breeze shot a meet-low 38 for nine holes and Hallie Rice led Milton with a 41.

Jessica Emerson had Navarre’s best finish, needing 52 strokes to finish the nine-hole course. Danielle O’Connor shot 55, Ailsa Clark and Laurel Emerson each carded a score of 56 and Brooke Murphy finished in 58 strokes.

Team scores are determined by adding each team’s four lowest individual scores.

The Raiders will golf against Gulf Breeze with a 4 p.m. tee time Monday at Tiger Point Golf Club.

Raiders match 2011 win total

Navarre High School’s volleyball team needed just five matches to equal its win total from last season. The Raiders beat Escambia in three sets Thursday in the Gators’ gym to improve to 4-1 overall, 4-0 in District 1-6A.

NHS finished with a 4-22 record in 2011.

Allison Freer paced the Raiders’ 25-11, 25-13, 25-20 win with 15 digs and seven service aces. Kelsey Belmain added seven kills and seven digs, Shamani Booker had nine digs and six kills, Kelly Barrett garnered 15 assists and Sarah Betts had four kills and six digs.

The Raiders host West Florida in a non-district match Monday. The varsity teams are scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. The freshmen play at 4:30 p.m. and the junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.
