Argos golfers earn academic honors

NORMAN, Okla. – The Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday that University of West Florida senior golfers Ryan Black and Thomas Guste-Pedersen are among 52 NCAA Division II student-athletes honored as Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholars.

Cleveland Golf and Srixon, makers of golf clubs and balls, sponsor the award given to golfers in their junior or senior years academically who have competed at least three years at the college level and played in at least 70 percent of their teams’ rounds while maintaining a stroke average of less than 78 and a grade-point average more than 3.2.

Black, of Port St. Lucie, was a four-time All-Gulf South Conference honoree, the third in league history. He finished his senior year with a scoring average of 73.63 and an average of 2.43.

Thomas Guste-Pedersen, from Helle, Norway, won the award for the second time in his career, and earned All-GSC honors in 2012. Guste-Pedersen finished the year with a 73.15 scoring average; he also earned a spot on the PING All-South Region team.

West Florida hires women’s golf coach

PENSACOLA – The University of West Florida recently announced hiring UWF alumni Bryan Clarke to replace Navarre High School graduate Jennifer Pandolfi as its new women's golf coach. Clarke is a three-time All-American and member of the Argonaut’s 2001 Division II men's golf national championship team.

"Bryan's extensive experience as an instructor will assist in developing our young women's golf team," UWF athletic director Dave Scott said. "We expect to be competitive regionally and nationally, and we believe Bryan will guide our team to success."

Clarke will become the third head coach in UWF women's golf history. Robin Dezarn led the program from its first season in 2002-03 through 2009, and Pandolfi guided the team from 2010-2012. The Argonauts have won six Gulf South Conference championships in 10 seasons, the most in GSC history.
