BASEBALL

Geyer commits to Mississippi State

Avery Geyer, who will be a senior at Pensacola Catholic High School this year, has committed to play baseball for Mississippi State University. He had a 9-1 record and a 1.45 earned-run average as a junior for the Crusaders, who won the Florida Class 4A state championship earlier this year.

 

BASKETBALL

UWF Recruiting Camp

University of West Florida women’s basketball coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton will host a recruiting camp from noon-6 p.m. Aug. 11 for high-school-age girls who hope to play college basketball. Cost is $35 per player and, besides instruction from Yelton, who won a national championship while playing at North Carolina, campers will receive a t-shirt, recruiting guide notebook, campus tour and snack. YMCA Flag Football Camp

The Fort Walton Family YMCA is hosting a Flag Football Camp for boys and girls, ages 5-12, from 9:30-11 a.m. Aug. 13-17. The cost of the camp is $35 for Y members and $50 for non-members. For more information, call 863-9622.

UWF starts fall seasons with Argo Rally

The University of West Florida will kick off the 2012-2013 college sports year with the fourth annual Argo Rally from 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Fish House, 600 S. Barracks St., south of Bayfront Parkway in Pensacola.

Fans and supporters are invited to meet UWF coaches, play with Argie, win prizes and enjoy free hors d'oeuvres. Indoor soccer

Registration is open for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade for youth indoor soccer at the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church Soundside Campus. Cost is $55 per child. Practices are for one hour per week, either on Tuesdays or Thursdays and games will begin Sept. 8. Registration forms are available at the front desk. Slow down, don’t go so fast …

 

The on-campus speed limit at Ole Miss is 18 mph to honor Rebels great Archie Manning – 18 was the quarterback’s jersey number. In April, the university lowered the speed limit on one small road to 10, the number Manning’s son Eli wore playing for Mississippi from 2000-2003 and for the NFL’s New York Giants, whom he’s led to two Super Bowl wins.
