UWF starts fall seasons with Argo Rally

The University of West Florida will kick off the 2012-2013 college sports year with the fourth annual Argo Rally from 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16 at the Fish House, 600 S. Barracks St., south of Bayfront Parkway in Pensacola.

Soap scrimmage tonight

The Navarre High School football Raiders will scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bennett C. Russell Stadium. Cost of admission is a towel or laundry soap. Coach Jay Walls said liquid laundry soap is preferred.

Richardson could play in Browns’ opener

The Cleveland Browns hope rookie running back Trent Richardson can play in the team’s season-opening game against the Philadelphia Eagles, coach Pat Shurmur said Thursday.

Olympic wrestler has local ties

 

Wrestler Sam Hazewinkel, a Pensacola Christian Academy graduate, begins his quest for Olympic gold Friday in London. Competition begins at 7 a.m. CT.

Hazewinkel, 28, will compete in the 55-kilogram freestyle bracket. He is Team USA’s top-ranked wrestler in that weight division. He went 140-0 and won three state championships at Pensacola Christian Academy, won two Junior National Greco Championship and 107-7 in three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. Hazewinkel lives in Norman, Okla., where he trains with Gator Wrestling Club, coached by Rob Hermann.

Hazewinkel’s father, Dave, and uncle, Jim, both were Olympians.
