The Navarre High School Baseball Booster Club held its annual dinner and awards banquet on Thursday, May 16, in the Parish Center of St. Sylvester Catholic Church.
Players, coaches, Diamond Girls, family members and special guests attended the event.
Coaches Trey Rose and Clark Brown introduced the freshmen team and presented certificates of participation. Coaches Johnny Cook and Joe Prokop did the same for the junior varsity team. Head coach David "Bubba" Meredith recognized the 20 members of the 2013 varsity squad and handed out certificates, varsity letters, pins and bars to the players.
Navarre High School principal Brian Noack presented plaques to team members who have the highest grade-point averages from each class. Octavien Moyer and Kyle Scheller shared the honor for the freshmen class. Sophomore Billy Unterbrink represented his class for the second time. Chandler Moorer, a junior, won the award for the third straight year and senior Brendan White was recognized for the fourth year in a row.
Meredith presented individual awards to four outstanding players for their contributions to the Raiders baseball team. Robby Miller received the "Silver Slugger” Award for his team-high .342 batting average and leading the team in runs scored, singles and triples. First baseman Kevin Jones won the "Gold Glove” Award" with his .983 fielding percentage. Jared Gonzalez' 4-2 record, 36 strikeouts and 3.16 ERA earned him the "Cy Young” Award. Jason Frederick won the "Team Player” Award for his sportsmanship, enthusiasm, and all-around play.
Special guest Paulette Rollant presented the Daniel Vincent Rollant Memorial Scholarship to four deserving seniors based on their academic standing, community service and essay submissions. Winners were Draven Grimes, Payne Walker, Robby Miller and Brendan White.
Booster club members also were recognized and presented with gifts for their commitment and dedication to the baseball program and booster club: Chris Rutledge and Mandy Unterbrink for their work with the "Diamond Girls," team photographer Amy Frederick, concession and team meal chairperson Jimmie Marshall, and officers Lori Gonzalez and Traci Walker.
The Raiders baseball team already is preparing for the 2014 season. The team will play games against local high school teams and competing in several tournaments in June.
