Navarre High School distance jumpers Nick Benton and Elijah Appel are the only Raiders competing at the Class 3A state track and field meet Friday, May 3, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Benton finished second in the triple jump and third in the long jump April 25 at the Region 1-3A meet in Tallahassee, and Appel finished fourth in the triple jump. The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state competition.
Benton set a school record in the long jump, clearing 22 feet, 3.25 inches. Raphael Webb of Gainesville won the event with a leap of 23-7.
Despite struggling much of the season with a thigh injury, Benton’s triple jump of 45-3.5 was just 1.5 inches short of the regionals-winning distance: Terrance Sims of Pine Forest won the event with 45-5.
Appel, who never had competed in jumping events until March, jumped 44-0.5 in the triple jump, more than a foot better than his previous personal best in the event.
