As many as four Navarre High School weightlifters could qualify to compete for a state championship April 19 in Kissimmee.
Marvin Darby, Jay Warren and T.J. Woodberry finished second in their weight divisions and Kody Kelley placed fourth at a sectional April 3 in Fort Walton Beach. First-place winners were guaranteed a spot in the state meet; lifters who finished second-fourth at state-qualifying meets around the state were entered into a lottery to determine the rest of the field at state.
The Raiders had not been notified of the lottery’s results before Navarre Press’ production deadline.
“Team-wise, we had a good year,” NHS coach Garrett Bagley said. “We will probably have at least three lifters go to the state meet. The lottery usually takes most of the second-place finishers and some of the third- and fourth-place finishers.”
Darby placed second in the 238-pound weight class. He benched 340 pounds, his best lift of the year. He also had a 310-pound clean-and-jerk.
Warren placed second in the 199-pound division. Warren had a 340-pound bench press and a 260-pound clean-and-jerk for a 600-pound total.
Woodberry placed second in the 139-pound class. He bench-pressed 255 pounds and had a clean-and-jerk of 240 pounds.
“I think I could have done better,” Woodberry said. “I know I can improve on those numbers at the state meet. I barely missed an attempt at 260 pounds on my last clean-and-jerk attempt.
“I would rather miss on a personal best attempt than do it easily and then wonder how much more I could have lifted,” he added.
Kelley placed fourth in the 169-pound division with personal-best lifts in both the bench press (295 pounds) and the clean-and-jerk (250 pounds).
“I think I did well today,” Kelley said. “My combined lift total today was 15 pounds more than my district meet total from two weeks ago.”
Nick Benton, who has been among the top lifters in the 183-pound class this year despite a thigh injury, couldn’t complete a 295-pound clean-and-jerk despite clearing more than 300 pounds several times earlier in the season.
