The Budo Dojo Martial Arts Club recently competed in the Northwest Florida Spring Martial Arts Championships sponsored by Gordon Martial Arts in Crestview. Six students competed in a variety of divisions, earning a total of 10 trophies.
Jacob Rutherford – Second in sparring and empty-hand forms, third in sparring
Calista Salazar – First in sparring and empty-hand forms
Adrian Salazar – First in sparring, second in empty-hand forms
John Grim – Third in sparring
Joseph Gragg – Second in weapons forms
Matthew Ferguson – Third in empty-hand forms
This was the Club’s first outing since relocating from the Betty J. Pullum Family YMCA, where the club had trained for the past 10 years, to the Broadway Lights Dance Center.
Hanshi Anthony Whitmer, shihan Bob Ferguson, Jr., sensei Steven Kurtz and assistant instructor Bobbi Whitmer also traveled to Crestview to coach the students and help judge events. The club will compete in Andalusia, Ala., in June and the U.S. Open Tournament, which features more competitors than any martial arts event worldwide, July 5-6 in Orlando.
