McGuire's run invades Pensacola

Nearly 17,000 green-clad runners, many costumed for the occasion, rushed through Pensacola’s downtown streets Saturday in the 36^th McGuire’s St. Patrick’s Day 5K.

More than 700 Navarre residents participated in the race that, for years, has been more about revelry than running. But St. Patrick’s Day runs – or parties masquerading as runs – are not unusual. McGuire’s 5K has the added attraction of being the nation’s biggest “prediction run” – before the race, participants predict how long it will take them to finish the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course. Runners who finish closest to their predicted times – faster or slower – as well as the fastest runners, earn awards.

Navarre runners were not among the fastest – Caleb Carmichael, 28, of Pensacola finished first overall in 15 minutes, 53.32 seconds and Jackie Kosakowski, 29, also of Pensacola, was the fastest female in 19:12.29 – but several locals were among the most accurate prognosticators of their own pace.

Lewis Whidden, 51, finished just 3/10ths of a second off his predicted time of 33:20, best in his age group, and Micah Hreczkosij, 7, was just 3.43 seconds slower than predicted, the best guess among runners 9 and younger.

Genna Edwards, 12, and Sondra Halmaghi, 49, finished first in their age groups with times that differed 1.54 seconds and 1.29 seconds, respectively, from their predictions.
