Mid-distance runners lead Raiders

Strong performances by Navarre High School’s middle-distance runners helped the Raiders finish third in the 14-team field Friday, March 2, at the 32nd Annual Frank Lay Patriot Invitational track and field meet at Pace. (PHOTO: Shelby Clark lands a long-jump.)

Senior James Mullin collected the Raiders’ only first-place finish, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 3.25 seconds. He also ran legs on Navarre’s second-place 4 x 800-meter relay team and fourth-place 4 x 400 relay team.

Area track and field powerhouses Pine Forest and West Florida finished first and second in the boys’ and girls’ team standings. The Lady Eagles garnered 145 points, West Florida had 109 and Gulf Breeze finished third with 54 points. Navarre’s girls finished 11th in the 16-team field with 15 points.

Pine Forest dominated the boys’ competition, finishing with 134.5 points. Second-place West Florida finished with 76.5 points, followed by Navarre with 66.

Mullin anchored the 4 x 800 relay team, which included Trent Beck, Dominic Dudai and Tanner Wilcox. The Raiders finished in 8:23.84, barely more than a half-second behind West Florida (8:23.32).

Wilcox finished second in the 1,600-meter run in 4:34.50, Miguel Villanueva was runner-up in the 400-meter dash in 53.03 – 0.18 seconds behind Brandon Amendt of Pace. Nick Benton, who has been rehabbing a hamstring injury and competed sparingly this spring, placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet, 2.5 inches – two inches short of winner Terrance Sims of Pine Forest. Pole-vaulter Roman Spear finished third for Navarre, clearing a height of 12-6.

Hurdler Hannah Gullickson had the Lady Raiders’ best individual finishes, placing fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (51.85 seconds) and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.5). The Navarre girls’ 4 x 400 relay team of Elle Crouse, Kelsey Belmain, Lauren Teichner and Taylor Basiger) placed fifth in 4:29.48.
