Navarre High School’s weightlifting team traveled to Pace on Feb. 25 to compete in a three-team meet and came away with the narrowest of victories.
Led by first-place finishes in the 139-, 183-, 199-, 219- and 238-weight divisions, Navarre won the event with 42 points. Pace placed second with 41 and Escambia was a close third with 38 points. Because the meet included three teams, the scoring within a weight division was 5 points for first, three for second, two for third and 1 point for fourth. The fourth-place finishes became very important for the overall scoring.
Anthony Gomes placed fourth in the 119-pound division with a 100-pound bench press and a 110-pound clean-and-jerk, for a 210-pound total.
Aubrey Wesson was third in the 129-pound weight division. Wesson benched 175 pounds and cleaned 145 pounds, giving him a 320-pound combined lift.
T. J. Woodberry finished first in the 139-pound weight division. He bench pressed 230 pounds and matched that number for his clean-and-jerk, giving him a 460-pound combined lift. Brock Barberi placed third in the same weight class with a bench press of 215 pounds and a clean-and-jerk of 210 pounds, for a 425-pound total.
Steeler Wright placed fourth in the 154-pound class. Wright’s total was comprised of a 210-pound bench press and a clean-and-jerk of 190 pounds.
In the 169-weight division, Kody Kelly placed third. His bench press of 265 pounds and a 225-pound clean-and-jerk gave him a combined total of 490 pounds. The total amount was an increase of 15 pounds over his previous best.
Nick Benton won the 183-pound weight division with a 295-pound bench press and a 315-pound clean-and-jerk, giving him a combined lift of 610 pounds.
Jay Warren won the 199-pound weight class with a combined lift of 590 pounds. Warren had a 320-pound bench press and a clean-and-jerk of 270 pounds. Dre Taylor placed second behind Warren in the division. Taylor benched 295 pounds and had a 270-pound clean-and-jerk.
Monte Thompson won the 219-pound division with a bench press of 275 pounds and a clean-and-jerk of 275 pounds, for a 550 pound total. Colton Mapoles placed second in the division with a combined weight of 540 pounds. Mapoles bench pressed 275 pounds and cleaned 265.
Marvin Darby placed first in the 238-pound division with a 305-pound bench press and a 285-pound clean-and-jerk, giving him a combined lift of 590 pounds. Mitch Posey finished second with a 315-pound bench press and a 255-pound clean-and-jerk.
In the heavyweight division, Devin Colonel finished fourth. Colonel had a 265-pound bench press and a 275-pound clean-and-jerk, giving him a 540-pound combined lift.
The next scheduled meet is on March 13 at Washington.
