Raiders prevail 2 – 1 over Milton

It was a rough and tumble affair, but the Navarre High School girls soccer team held on to win by one goal over Milton, at home on Nov. 22.

A late goal by the Raiders' leading scorer, Hannah Gullickson, proved to be the difference as the Raiders, despite missing a couple of players, defeated their former district rival, 2 to 1.

Both teams found it difficult to mount a scoring threat for the first 20 minutes. The game was played essentially at midfield.

The Raider midfielders repeatedly turned back the Milton forwards and the ball hardly entered the defensive end of the field. However, the Raiders were also turned away as the Panther midfielders did their job defensively.

It all changed at the 25-minute mark. Elaina Cain took a ball away from a Panther forward. She found Gabby Armstrong with a pass near midfield. Armstrong moved the ball over to Rylie Slaybaugh a few feet away and she passed to Hunter Moorer streaking down the left side. Moore pushed the ball ahead to Gullickson near the 18-yard line.

As the Panther defense collapsed on her, Gullickson found Katy Morrow open on the right side with a pass. Morrow's shot found the back of the net on the right side for the first score of the game.
