Santa Rosa County Emergency Operations Center is now open as of 7 a.m. Saturday and is at Level 2, which is a partial activation with a small emergency staff on hand to handle calls and direct staff. According to EM Plans Chief Daniel Hahn said that other emergency staff is on standby and the county will be in touch frequently with the National Weather Service in Mobile on updates on Tropical Storm Karen, which continues to weaken in the Gulf of Mexico.
Most impacts from the storm in its current state are expected to be high surf and heavy rain on Sunday. Hahn also reminds swimmers that rip currents are already present along the coast and urges swimmers and beach-goers to avoid going out in the water as TS Karen approaches.
If Karen ramps up in intensity, Hahn said the county will then call in additional emergency staff and elevate to a higher EOC activation.
More details to follow as they become available.
