Santa Rosa Public Information Officer Rich Alloy released information that at 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, Sgt. Joseph Dunn of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was on routine patrol in his marked cruiser and traveling westbound on Hwy 90 in Pace. Sgt. Dunn was driving in the outside lane of Hwy 90 near the intersection of Sunset Drive. A pedestrian who was identified as Bruce Crutchfield was walking within the outside lane of Hwy 90 with his back towards the approaching westbound traffic. Sgt. Dunn was unable to stop in time due to the lighting conditions and dark clothing being worn by Crutchfield.
Sgt. Dunn struck Crutchfield and both came to rest on the North shoulder of the westbound lanes. Crutchfield died on scene.
At this time, the incident in being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol who assumes the lead investigative responsibility for traffic accidents.
