Reward for arsonist

Santa Rosa County Crime Stoppers, in partnership with Arson Alert, is offering a combined reward up to $6,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist starting fires on Blackwater River State Forest, Florida’s largest state forest. The most recent fire took place on Friday, January 23rd, consuming 90 acres and threatening several residences near Big Red Road and Sellersville Road, north of the Munson community.  The incident required the response of multiple fire protection units.   According to Ben Wolcott, Operations Administrator for Blackwater District, “We need help finding the person(s) responsible for these fires, which have destroyed nearly 200 acres.”   In addition to the potential threat to life and property these fires pose, they also risk utilizing valuable resources, making firefighters less able to respond to other fires as quickly.   Arson is a felony, punishable by 5 years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.  Additionally, those responsible for starting wildfires may also be held liable for the cost of suppressing the fire and damage to property or persons as a result of the fire. Any suspicious activity, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, in the effected area should be reported to Santa Rosa County Crime Stoppers at 437-STOP or online at www.srccs.com. You do not have to provide your name and will instead be given an identification number with which you can claim the reward.
