UPDATED: Man dies in rollover accident

A rollover accident today on U.S. Highway 98 near Crescent Wood Road in Navarre resulted in one death.

Holley-Navarre Fire Chief Ron Norton reported that witnesses said a pick-up truck was traveling westbound on U.S. 98 and travelled into the median. The driver, Leonard Gustave Hayes, 52, of Navarre, over-corrected and then lost control of the vehicle. Witnesses said the truck flipped over into the eastbound lane and ended up in the ditch on the south end of the road.

“When firefighters and myself arrived, bystanders were doing CPR on him (the driver),” Norton said. “Firefighter EMTs took over and had a pulse back… but eventually he was lost.”

Hayes was pronounced dead by Lifeguard Ambulance EMTs. According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Hayes was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck.

Norton said there were three dogs in the vehicle and they were taken by Santa Rosa County Animal Control to a veterinarian’s office. He said one dog had broken something and another had cuts and bruises.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, but traffic was back up for hours while FHP cleaned up the scene.
