USAA warns of phishing scam

USAA Bank is warning its members to be on the lookout for a scam email that attempts to collect the user’s private information.

The email, which asks customers to verify their information by clicking on a link, appears to come from USAA and includes the company’s logo, but has telltale clues of its nefarious origins.

The email is not addressed to the user by name, but rather includes the general greeting of “Dear Customer”. Additionally, the email includes incorrect grammar and English, which is also a sign the email is not sent from USAA.

Users that click on the link to verify their information, as the email requests, will be redirected to a website that asks them to provide their personal information including PIN, card number, billing address and other information.

USAA’s website urges users who receive the email to disregard it, reminding customers that “USAA will not ask for any personal or account information, including PINs or passwords, in an email.”

Beware of emails that:

• Urge you to act quickly because your account may be suspended or closed.
• Don't address you by name, but use more generic language like "Dear valued customer."
• Ask for account numbers, passwords or other personal information.
