UPDATED: Wildfire contained in Tiger Point

As of Tuesday, Florida Forest Service crews had a wildfire in Tiger Point Subdivision 90-percent contained.

According to Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Joe Zwierzchowski, an eight-person crew was manning four brush trucks as they work to mop up the remaining hot spots. The three-acre fire started late Sunday evening in a wooded area between Madura Road and Soundside Drive and will continue to smolder for the next few days because of the thick layer of organic material on the forest floor known as the duff layer.

"We are hopeful to have the bulk of the hot spots extinguished today. With rain forecast for later this evening, we will continue to monitor the situation but no major problems are anticipated in the coming days," he said.

Residents began to smell smoke around 8 p.m. Sunday night. The Midway Fire Department was first on the scene and the Forest Service arrived between 2-3 a.m.
