Junior pitcher Brandon Compton struck out 11 Raiders' batters and blasted a three-run homerun to lead Ezell-Harding Christian School to a 9-1 win at Navarre on Monday.
Compton allowed four hits and pitched all seven innings to earn the victory in the first game of the season for the Eagles, visiting from Antioch, Tenn. Zack Jenkins also homered for the Eagles, who led 3-0 after five innings but erupted for five runs in the sixth. Cody Hyder singled twice, doubled, drove in two runs and scored after being hit by a pitch in the decisive sixth inning. Rod Glatt singled, doubled and scored twice.
Derek LaMar started and took the loss for Navarre (4-6). He allowed two runs in three innings pitched on two hits, four walks and a two-base infield error and struck out four Eagles. Brock Secondine allowed a run in two innings on three hits. He struck out two and walked none. Jarrett Zimmerly started the sixth inning for the Raiders but was victimized by a pair of careless outfield errors. With one out, Glatt singled and went to third when left fielder Gavin Wehby let the ball get by him. Zimmerly nicked Hyder, who stole second, and walked Hayden Ray to load the bases. Right fielder Jacob Terry missed a routine fly ball by Nolan Leebrick that scored Glatt. Hyder scored on a wild pitch before Compton sent a 3-2 curveball from Nick Combs, facing his first batter, soaring over the left center-field fence. Zack Jenkins singled before Combs struck out Jake Williams and Navarre catcher Dusty Jones gunned down pinch-runner Drew Tice trying to steal second base.
Combs finished the game for Navarre, allowing a run in the seventh.
The Raiders scored their only run in the sixth inning. Dusty Jones singled with one out and, with the bases loaded and two outs, Cale Secondine's hit scored pinch-runner Kyle Rogers. Pinch hitter Cory Catyb lined out to right field for the third out.
The Raiders continue a busy week of baseball against Prattville, Ala., Christian Academy at 7 p.m. at NHS. Navarre will host rival Gulf Breeze at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
