Tax notices to be mailed

Greg Brown, Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser, will be mailing Truth in Millage (TRIM) notices this week informing taxpayers of the assessment on their property. Santa Rosa County's assessments have dropped $500 million over last year. Unfortunately, taxpayers may still see an increase in taxes due to the constitutional amendments dealing with the “Save Our Homes” and Non-homesteaded properties.

"Save our Homes" is an amendment to the Florida constitution that took effect in 1995.  It limits the annual increase in the assessed value of homesteaded properties to 3% or the National Consumer Price Index (CPI), whichever is less.

This year the Florida Department of Revenue has determined the Consumer Price Index rose 2.7%.  What this means is your homestead assessment could increase.  For instance, if in 2009 you had a difference between your Just (Market) Value and your Assessed Value, then you will see an increase in your assessment of 2.7%.  Additionally, the school millage has slightly increased which will also impact the amount of taxes owed. The TRIM notices will include information on how citizens can participate in the county and school budget hearings.

Taxpayers should receive their TRIM Notices this week.  If you do not receive your TRIM Notice, please call the Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser at (850) 983-1880.
