Class size amendment passes first hurdle

A proposed change to the state's constitution that would cap class size limits passed its first hurdle Thursday.

Senator Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, and Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, proposed to amend the current class-size requirements, changing the “maximum” to an “average.” The bill would cap out class sizes, but at higher rates.

Individual class limits were supposed to go into effect this August for the first time since the bill passed in 2002.

In its third day of a 60-day session, Gaetz's bill passed the Ways and Means Committee and will go before the Senate for a full vote.
