Gulf Breeze is among thousands of communities supporting turning lights off at 8:30 p.m. Saturday for an hour to support efforts to slow global warming.
According to the Web site www.earthhour.org, 2,848 cities, towns and municipalities in 84 countries have already committed to the cause.
Gulf Breeze Mayor Lane Gilchrist, a former Gulf Power employee, said that power company appreciates the importance of creating and using electricity more efficiently.
"It works hard to get people to conserve, insulate and use efficient lighting," Gilchrist said in published reports earlier this month. "This is an occasion to call attention to conserving energy."
Earth Hour was launched by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about climate change. Last year, more than 50 million people in more than 400 cities turned off their lights during Earth Hour.
