Gulf Breeze seeks recount

Gulf Breeze city elections are more than two months away, but the mayor and council are asking for a recount – of the city’s population.

“It’s disappointing they’ve got us going down 25 residents,”  Mayor Lane Gilchrist said Monday of the University of Florida Bureau of Economic Development and Research’s annual population estimate.  “I think we ought at least to inquire, to find out how they came up with this.”
The bureau estimated the city’s 2008 population to be 5,780, down from 5,805 last year. The 2000 census counted 5,665 Gulf Breeze residents in 2000. The bureau provides population information to the state for use calculating revenue sharing and other population-based data.
