As the rest of the preschoolers sat in a circle, listing to their teacher’s instructions, 2-year-old Travis Turner was hiding behind the bookcase.
Travis mimicked the noise of a car horn as he pushed the little toy car across the floor. He was in awe at the toy’s mobile structure.
“Travis, are you going to come join us?”
It was his teacher, Jessica Dowden, who was leading the rest of Travis’ classmates in a circle activity.
Reluctantly, the little boy scooped up the car and brought it to the group.
“This is the first day we’ve had them and it’s been great so far,” said Jennifer Campbell, the lead teacher for the YMCA’s new preschool program. “We have about 20 kids signed up but only 15 here today.
