Mobile loses tanker contract

The Air Force awarded the $35 billion contract to build air refueling tankers to the Boeing Co.

The Boeing Co. beat out the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Co., which would have built the tankers at the military base in Mobile.

Secretary of the United States Air Force Michael Donley said, during a press conference from the Pentagon streamed live, the contract went to Boeing based on Boeing’s ability to meet all 372 requirements in the contract and due to a “price tax payers could afford.”

“The competition favored no one, but the taxpayers and the fighters,” Donley said.

The contract would have meant thousands of jobs to the Mobile and Gulf Coast areas.
