Van Camp leads Owls in opener

Former Navarre High School quarterback Jeff Van Camp will lead the Florida Atlantic University Owls into their college football season opener tonight in Birmingham, Ala., against UAB.

Van Camp, from Gulf Breeze, is a red-shirt senior. He started the Owls’ last five games after standout starter Rusty Smith was injured in October. After playing sparingly in 2007 and 2008 as Smith’s backup, Van Camp completed 109 of 184 pass attempts in 2009 for 1,372 yards, 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions – none since his first start, a 56-29 loss to UAB’s Blazers on Nov. 7.

Kickoff for tonight’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN3. It also will be available online at fausports.com.
