July Fourth pier fireworks display in limbo

The Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council's plans to shoot fireworks off the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier July Fourth are now in jeopardy due to the encroaching effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company conducting the fireworks display suggested that the TDC create an alternate plan in the event ignitiing fireworks off the pier poses a safety risk, said Kate Wilkes, executive director of the TDC. The fireworks event will still be held on July Fourth, but more than likely be shot off a barge.

The Santa Rosa County Commmision plans on address the issue at its June 21 committees meeting at 9 a.m. in Milton.
