School district makes storm plans

If Hurricane Gustav makes landfall in Santa Rosa County, the school district is ready.

The schools will be  “batting down the hatches,”  said Joey Harrell, director of transportation for the Santa Rosa County School District.

In the event of a storm, schools may be used as shelters and will be closed to allow for that, said John Rogers, superintendent of schools.

School will be open on Monday, and a decision will be made 1 p.m. that day as to whether schools will be open on Tuesday, Rogers said at the Aug. 28 school board meeting.

If the storm heads this way, the board will meet either Wednesday or Thursday to discuss the next steps.

 “It is important to have a plan of action,”  Rogers said.  “It’s all about being proactive, but I hope we don’t have to meet.”
