In honor of National Safe Boating Week, May 21-28, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 18 hosted a day of education and fun at the Riverwalk Park South May 21.
The focus of this year’s Safe Boating Day was lifejackets. Chief John Reble said this is the normal theme of the safe boating weeks because drowning is consistently the single greatest cause of boating fatalities.

“What typically happens, for whatever reason, someone finds him or herself in the water when they weren’t expecting it, but they are not wearing a life jacket and end up drowning,” said Reble.
