Motorcycle safety affects all drivers

A rider maneuvers her bike through the Base Exchange parking lot after Eglin’s Motorcycle Safety Day. Motorcycle enthusiasts have many reasons why they enjoy riding.

The joy of seeing open road, the thrill of feeling the wind rush past at 50 miles per hour, and the high fuel efficiency of motorcycles are all cited as benefits of riding a motorcycle.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a chance for all drivers to learn more about the shared responsibility of all drivers to keep the roads safe. There are more than 11,000 motorcycles registered in Santa Rosa County.

That number has increased more than 35-percent in the last five years, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
