The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners denied a conditional-use permit for a proposed dog kennel and grooming facility to be located off of U.S. Highway 98 in Navarre.
The business venture on Kubota Lane ran into some public opposition during an Aug. 11 meeting but was narrowly approved by the zoning board. However, commissioners denied the request Aug. 25.
Joshua and Melanie Hawkey requested the conditional use for a boarding facility, Wags and Whiskers, on a piece of property within a highway commercial development and residential two zoning district, but neighboring homeowners of the Fountainview subdivision were against the conditional use.
Planning and zoning associate Leslie Statler said the proposed business would be contained to the HCD portion of the property. The business would contain a fenced-in exercise area, one existing building for a grooming parlor and a secondary building for overflow kennels.
