On Jan. 18 a yorkie mix, Jumper, got away from his owners, ran into Racetrack Road and was hit by a car.
Dave, a PAWS volunteer, and Melissa witnessed i and rescued Jumper from the road.
The decision was made that Melissa would rush Jumper to an emergency vet clinic. The vet said that both of Jumper’s back legs were severely broken and required specialized orthopedic surgery.
The morning following the accident Jumper was transported from the clinic to PAWS. The PAWS employees were then faced with deciding if it would be fair to put Jumper through the painful surgery and long recovery that would follow, but his eyes pleaded for our help, and the staff couldn’t resist his will to live.
They were then faced with how to pay for the surgery. That is when Melissa and Dave offered to help raise money for the surgery. Melissa not only donated, but she also collected money from her co-workers at ResortQuest. Dave and his wife donated and had family and friends from Pennsylvania send donations.
PAWS posted Jumper’s story on Facebook and the response was almost immediate. Within 72 hours, $1,100 had been raised, the amount needed in order for Jumper to begin his recovery.
Pictures and video was posted of his progress on Facebook so that those who had financed his surgery could share in the joy of his recovery. A few days after his surgery, Jumper’s owners came to PAWS and said they were in the process of trying to find him a new home because they were moving. They agreed to allow us to find Jumper his new forever home.
Another twist in Jumper’s life occurred when Summer, another supporter of PAWS, offered to foster Jumper in her home during his recovery. With Summer’s love and patience he received the rest and care he needed and within a few weeks he began walking.
One day, one of the women who had donated to Jumper’s cause called the shelter and she shared that she just couldn’t get Jumper off her mind and out of her heart. She said that even though she currently had three dogs and a cat, she would love to invite Jumper to be a part of her family.
This story exemplifies what can be done whena few people make a unified effort to save a deserving animal from a desperate situation. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who donated and helped us save Jumper and give him the second chance at life that he deserved.
