On June 3, the Santa Rosa Emergency Operations Center attracted some politically powerful people to its daily 3:30 p.m. conference call with the Unified Command in Mobile, Ala., regarding the oil-spill crisis.

Gov. Charlie Crist and Florida U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, as well as Maj. Gen. Douglas Burnett, adjutant general of Florida, participated in the phone conference and held a short press conference afterward.

At the press conference, Nelson issued strong language for BP, the incident command in Mobile, federal regulators, the oil industry as a whole, and even some of his fellow senators.

“It bothers me a lot,” Nelson said sternly, when asked his reaction to the fact that only 29 of 332 available vessels are in the Gulf of Mexico. “I want to see the plan from the U.S. Coast Guard —which is the incident command — I want to see this plan for the entire gulf. The oil is affecting several states. I want to see how they are going to prevent what is happening in Louisiana to happen along the rest of the gulf.”
