During the 1950s and ’60s, if you were male and not enrolled as a fulltime student, it didn’t take long for the government to send you a draft notice.
Benny Burt graduated high school in Montgomery, Ala., in 1966. He and his wife, Shirley, had been married for about two months when he received his notice in 1967.
