Community fills ‘Buckets of Hope’ for Haiti

“Many drops make a bucket, many buckets make a pond, many ponds make a lake, and many lakes make an ocean,” said self-made millionaire Percy Ross, known for his philanthropy. That very notion is behind a Haiti disaster-relief effort that began in Jacksonville, Fla., and has spread across Florida, including Navarre.“Buckets of Hope,” inspired by Dr. John Sullivan, executive treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention, has risen to an ocean of effort among Florida Southern Baptists.“I’ve spoken to Dr. Sullivan about it,” said Jim Pennington, pastor of First Baptist Church of Navarre. “We want this to be about the community, not just about our church or just churches. We’ve talked with businesses about participating. We’re just facilitating this effort.”

The beauty of the concept is its simplicity, Pennington said.
