The Munchausen mystery

Read more...It’s the stuff mysteries are made of.

Medical mysteries, that is.

Though its incidence is rare, one local doctor said the diagnosis is very real – and can be quite scary.

It’s called Munchausen syndrome, though those in the medical field call it a factitious disorder.

Tainted eggs didn’t affect Fla. Residents

A recent outbreak of salmonella stemming from tainted eggs has not affected residents in Florida.

Still, in a news release issued last week, officials from the Centers for Disease Control are urging residents not to eat recalled eggs, and to exercise caution when consuming and cooking eggs.

Though the recent incidents appears to be isolated to just three states, the CDC is joining forces with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service to investigate a nationwide increase of salmonella infections.

Road to recovery

Read more...To look at 21-year-old Alexandra, you might think she’s a typical 20-something.

Sitting casually at a cafeteria table, she seemed relaxed, comfortable even.

She is tall, smiles easily and a trendy sweater is draped over her slender shoulders.  Her makeup is low-key and expertly applied and, save for a slight weariness in her eyes, she might be just another person sitting at a cafeteria table.

Alzheimer’s drug shows hope, reality is in the ‘right now’

Though a breakthrough drug unveiled at a medical conference last month provided hope for those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, the reality is that more than 5 million Americans are living with a debilitating cognitive disorder for which there is no cure.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, a new individual is diagnosed with the disease every 70 seconds. Unless something is done, by 2050, up to 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s, and a new case will be diagnosed every 33 seconds.

Florida ranks among the highest in terms of incidences of Alzheimer’s, with nearly 400,000 adults with the disorder.  By 2025, that number is expected to swell to almost 600,000.
