County encounters shigellosis outbreak

Cases of shigellosis have spiked in Santa Rosa County this year, leading the health department to issue a warning to residents to be on the lookout for this potentially serious disease.

Shigellosis is a communicable disease caused by the bacteria Shigella. Those who are infected often exhibit fever, stomach cramps and diarrhea within 24 to 48 hours of exposure.

“This year we have seen 20 cases, which is high for us,” said Mary Beverly, epidemiologist with the SRC Health Department.
