Prevention key to lowering colon cancer risks

Colon cancer is the number two cause of cancer deaths, second only to lung cancer. More than 50,000 Americans each year lose their lives to this deadly disease.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and this year brings with it a host of new research on the disease, including the benefits of prevention.

The American College of Physicians issued a new guidance statement on colorectal cancer prevention, stating that many Americans put off or avoid screening tests that could save lives.

"Only about 60 percent of American adults aged 50 and older get screened, even though the effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening in reducing deaths is supported by the available evidence," said Dr. Virginia L. Hood, president of American College of Physicians in a statement dated Mar. 5.
