World AIDS Day: 30 Years of HIV

It has been more than 30 years since the first cases of AIDS were reported. Since that time, more than 615,000 Americans have lost their lives to AIDS, and more than 1.1 million are estimated to be living with the disease today.

The global AIDS epidemic has touched every state in the country and every nation on the planet, without regard to race, creed, color or gender. Dec. 1 marks World AIDS Day, first designated by the World Health Organization in 1988.

In the U.S. alone, there is a new case of HIV infection every nine-and-a-half minutes.

World AIDS Day is designed to unite people around the world in the fight against HIV, to show solidarity with those who are living with HIV and to honor those who have died.
