FCAT penalties result in 'B' rating for NHS

The Florida Department of Education recently released Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores for high schools. Although Navarre High School earned enough points for an‘A’rating, penalties forced that rating down to a ‘B.’ Florida’s DOE penalized the Santa Rosa County School District for the percent of the lowest 25 percent of students who made learning gains in reading and the graduation rate of at-risk students.

The graduation rate for at risk-students in 2010 was 80 percent; in 2011 it fell to 72 percent.

The Department of Education glossary defines ‘at risk’ as:“a term applied to students who have not been adequately served by educational systems and who are at risk of failing to meet the state’s academic achievement standards. These students have a high risk of dropping out or failing school.”
