School’s (almost) out for the summer

Members of the Santa Rosa County School Board met on May 24 to conduct their regular monthly meeting and as is customary, began the meeting by awarding multiple honors and accolades to various schools and activities.

Outstanding student athletes from across the county were honored for their academic skills while participating in sports, and students from Locklin Tech in Milton, who medaled at the State SkillsUSA Competition, were recognized for their achievements as well.

Dr. Karen Barber, of the homeless education program for SRC, recognized both Pace High School and King Middle School for their award-winning posters and public service announcements that help to shed light on the problem of homeless students in SRC schools.

“We’re at 1,600 students who qualify for homeless education services,” Barber said. “It’s a sad subject but it’s really wonderful that we’re talking about it.”
