Middle school spearheads civics mandate

Florida Sen. Greg Evers, R-District 2, speaks to the seventh-grade class about state and local government April 20 at Holley-Navarre Middle School.

Not many people get excited about state-mandates, but Holley-Navarre Middle School teachers Ashley Kesterson and Pam Rose couldn’t wait to implement one in particular.

Santa Rosa County is one of the few counties in Florida that implemented the Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Civics Education Act a year ahead of schedule. The act requiring all seventh-graders to take a civics course went into effect July 1, 2010, but the full implementation of the program isn’t mandated until the 2012-13 school year.
