Two bills are before the Florida State Legislature that would allow advertising on school busses as a way to generate additional income for strapped school districts.
Senate Bill 344 would allow advertisements on school busses, sending half the income to school transportation, 25 percent to each school district's general operating fund and the final 25 percent to a local education foundation as an endowment to provide for further fundraising. The bill moved out of committee and is now before the Senate.
The move has sparked debate across the state about the wisdom of allowing ads in a school setting. One industry has already bowed out of any opportunity to advertise on busses.
