Staying safe online

October is National Cyber Security Month and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has issued some tips to help residents ensure that their trip down the information superhighway is as safe as possible.

Online scams, child predators, online bullying and seemingly safe-looking shopping sites are just some of the pitfall of the digital age. Keeping children safe while they surf is added pressure for parents.

FDLE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are just two agencies that are working to ensure parents familiarize themselves with the ways they can help keep their children safe from online pitfalls.

“Every year we spend more and more of our time online with laptops, tablets, and smart phones.” said Special Agent Supervisor Mike Phillips of FDLE’s Computer Crime Center in a press release.  “Let’s all use this month as a reminder to talk to our employees, families, and friends about cyber security. Simple steps, such as having a strong password and keeping it private, can protect us from a number of risks like identity theft and cyber bullying.”
