NHS students suit up for hazardous class

Ian Turoff’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science students pose with a hazardous materials suit used in HazMat Day, an out of the classroom experience designed to help students apply their scientific lessons to real world situations. Turoff tells them, “Science is a contact sport, and there are no spectators.”Kadie Brodie, a junior at Navarre High School, was named operations officer during a hazardous materials situation in her first period class. With canisters of potentially explosive, caustic chemicals littering the field, Brodie held her Emergency Response Guide in her hand and prepared to tell her classmates how to proceed to identify and neutralize the threat.

April 19 was HazMat Day for students in the Advanced Placement Environmental Science class, headed by teacher Ian Turoff. The event is just one of Turoff’s out-of-classroom experiences he schedules during the course of the school year.
