Traditionally held in May, this year’s prom was moved to March in the hopes that senior Ian Lockwood would be able to attend.
Sadly, that isn’t the case, but this year’s junior class, the hosts of the dance, felt that keeping the date was the most appropriate course of action to take. Most of the preparations were finished and many students had made plans for transportation and reservations for dinners in advance, making a change in the date impractical.
Assistant Principal Tim Short said that despite the loss the students suffered, this year’s prom would be a celebration of the entire senior class. A slideshow of photographs from the class of 2011 was planned for spot near to the refreshments and will show photos of students at school events as well as candid shots taken outside school.
Some students will no doubt take this opportunity to wear yellow and black in support of the Livestrong movement, and Short said he has received calls from local florists regarding the appropriateness of yellow and black flowers that students had ordered. No official memorial is planned for the evening; instead students will be celebrating the class as a whole and remembering the highlights of senior year.
Short expects a full crowd at this year’s prom. With 900 tickets available, it’s first come first served on who attends.
Tickets for prom are $25 and are available in the front office. Prom is scheduled to be held on March 26 at the Emerald Coast Conference Center beginning at 8 p.m.
(It was mistakenly reported that the prom would be held at the Navarre Conference Center. We regret this error.)
